I watched Cinderella several nights ago and I had forgotten how the mice play an integral role in the beginning and how Gus came along. The scene where Cinderella is out feeding the animals and Gus is trying to gather many corn kernels and he keeps losing them is hysterical!!! I also had forgotten how "evil" Lucifer the cat was made out to be. What an absolutely perfect name for him!! The colors in the restored DVD are magnificent as is the sound and music. As an aside, I enjoy genealogy and in my research I found one of my ancestors was named Cinderella (last name Meeker)!

I will take a different approach to Cinderella...although a classic and I love it...there are undertones that give a negative message....Why does Cinderella have to become a beauty to have the Prince fall in love with her....is it saying that a common person would never have gotten the attention that Cindy did at the ball????? Poor stepsisters...made out to be bumbling, ugly creatures...when in real life....step sisters and for that matter, step mothers can blend nicely into a family.....Just a little food for thought...and perhaps a way to stir this discussion up a bit!

This and The Black Cauldron are probably the only animated Disney films I absolutely cannot stand. It's a real shame for Cinderella too, since the designs in it are as lovely as any other film from that era. The castle is gorgeous, the chariot and Cinderella herself and everything...

But as characters, I can't stand the mice, the sisters, or Cinderella. She's a complete victim of circumstance with little to no personality. Everything is done for her, except for thje only time she actually takes any action for herself at the end. The rest of the time she blandly mopes about. Sure, even Aurora was more of a plot device than a character and I still like her more as a person.

Sorry to be a downer!

Interesting points of view. Rather than looking at it (the story) critically, I looked at it as entertainment and the technological achievement of the film. When you think each cell had to be individually drawn and painted and then filmed, the time consumed and the talent involved was phenomenal. CGA did not exist when this film was made.

As far as "Why does Cinderella have to become a beauty to have the Prince fall in love with her....is it saying that a common person would never have gotten the attention that Cindy did at the ball?????" if Cinderella had been made to be less than attractive, would the film appeal to the masses? If her fairy godmother hadn't turned her into a raving beauty where would the magic be? If the fairy godmother had given her a dress but none of the other entrapments, where would the story have gone? The following is a broad brush statement - every little girl dreams about being beautiful and dreams about becoming a princess (look at the popularity of the Bibidi Bobbidi Boutique). If Cinderella wasn't beautiful would little girls want to emulate her?? Look at how many little girls dress up in all of the princesses' garb when they go to the MK. If the Disney princesses were ugly, would the demand be there for the princess merchandise? What about the Disney marketing of the princesses and in conjunction with that the marketing of WDW? And how much money would be made if the princesses were less than attractive??

As far as the blending of families, ("Poor stepsisters...made out to be bumbling, ugly creatures...when in real life....step sisters and for that matter, step mothers can blend nicely into a family.....Just a little food for thought...and perhaps a way to stir this discussion up a bit!"), I can state from real life experience that the situation experienced by Cinderella does happen! When my sister died, my nephews were 10 and 7. Their father remarried and the step mother wanted NOTHING to do with my sister's children (she had 2 sons of her own the same ages). The boys were neglected and still carry emotional scars to this day (they are now 42 and 39).

SOOO - Jiminy Cricket, you succeeded in stirring up the discussion ;-)!!!

I thought I would add to disneyholic's comment on the cat! So personally, I think someone in Disney at that time had something against cats in general. Take the two Siamese cats in Lady and the Tramp - very evil and deceptive while the dogs try to save the birds and the fish. I can't blame Disney- I'm not a big cat fan myself, but it is interesting to me how the house cats are made to be bad in certain films. While in others, such as 101 dalmations, the cats and dogs are friends and they of course are good characters in the aristocats!

As for the movie Cinderella, it follows the lead of Snow White- girl and boy fall in love as soon as they see each other, then boy rescues damsel in distress. The story itself is a timeless classic fairy tale. I adore the small side characters such as the mice and Bruno. They are more individualized than the main 2 characters. Disney loves to send animals to the rescue too! The princes's father is also quite funny in that fatherly overbearing manner!

I heard it was Walt who didn't like cats. Does anybody know if that's true?

Marilyn, your family has a Cinderella and a wicked Stepmother! Any mouse friends? :P

I'm planning to watch the movie next week. Looking forward to discussing it with you guys.

I don't see much of a problem here really. Cinderella's transformation at the hands of the Fairy Godmother is no different from the transformation millions of teenage girls go through every year for prom and homecoming dances. Cinderella was already a beauty... even while scrubbing the floors and feeding the farm animals, her blond hair flowed gracefully and was well groomed rather than straggly or unkempt. She has a beautiful figure and long legs on which she dances wonderfully. Her complexion is fair and her skin appears to be without blemish. Her lips are a rosy color.

Cinderella was attending the royal ball, a function at which she would be expected to look her absolute best. Hence the amazing ball gown, the up do and further makeup. The Fairy Godmother did nothing to Cinderella that isn't done by girls for prom or any other fancy dress. They get their hair done, they choose out beautiful gowns and do their makeup. Before her makeover, Cinderella was already the most beautiful in the kingdom, but given the nature of the world in a time period such as that, there would have been a class system, and those of the upper classes did not even look once at the lower classes. She would not have been noticed at all were she in the same room as the prince. Looking the part of a proper member of the upper class would have been a requirement.

I read the original Brother's Grimm version recently, before rewatching the movie and Disney really did tone this down a massive amount. The original is fraught with blood and violence in the ways the step-mother tries to get her daughters the royal crown.

I love Cinderella! My avorite mice is Gus Gus! He is just so adorable! I absolutely dislike Lucifer, haha, he is such and evil cat! And the evil stepsisters make me laugh, they are so jelous of Cinderella that its funny to watch. I love the Fairy God Mother, shes the cutest also! An may I say, her prince is very charming for a cartoon character. If only I could find one for my own in real life! :P Cinderella is one of the best Disney movies hands down, Im glad it was our movie pick for May...
